A 55-year-old woman on death row in the local jail died of choking while eating her supper on Tuesday, a local newspaper reported on Thursday. The inmate had been convicted of performing witchcraft and entered death row five years ago.

In Search Of The Perfect Green

I can do purple, blue, black, hot pink, even the sluttiest shade of red. But there was one nail polish color I said I’d never wear—green.

One bottle changed that. Late last year, my friend Tatin Yang, fresh from a Hong Kong trip, gave me a bottle of Tony Moly nail enamel—a delicious color which reminded me of my favorite crayon when I was a kid.

They called it Deep Sea Green, I called it Cra

The Weird World Of Occult America (Book Review)

If witch-burning Puritans are the original jocks of American history, then the mystics surrounding Johannes Kelpius are the first goths. While the rest of the British colonies were still dutifully worshipping their angry Christian god, Kelpius and his followers—who fled Austria to settle in Philadelphia during the late seventeenth-century—busied themselves with astrology, alchemy, Kabbalah, and ot

Australians Sinners Are Envy Of World

When it comes to committing sin, Australians have been declared world champions.

In the latest issue of BBC Focus magazine, British researchers number-crunched the global differences in the seven deadly sins and found, when you add up the wrongdoings, Australia is at the top.

US Grants Home Schooling German Family Political Asylum

A US judge has granted political asylum to a German family who said they had fled the country to avoid persecution for home schooling their children.

In the first reported case of its kind, Tennessee immigration judge Lawrence Burman ruled that the family of seven have a legitimate fear of prosecution for their beliefs. Germany requires parents to enrol their children in school in most cases an

In the wake of hundreds of grave desecrations at the historic Burr Oak Cemetery in south suburban Alsip, House Democrat Bobby Rush of Chicago wants to bolster federal consumer protections governing the sale of funeral goods and services.

Rush today led a congressional hearing to examine whether the FTC, which regulates funeral homes, should have its purview expanded to include cemeteries, crema

Ohio High Court Narrowly Interprets Anti-Porn Law

The Ohio Supreme Court has narrowly interpreted a state law aimed to protecting children from online pornography and predators, delivering a blow to free-speech advocates who want it thrown out as unconstitutional.

In its unanimous ruling, the court said a 2004 law extending the state’s definition of “material harmful to minors” to the Internet is clearly intended to apply only to person-to-per

More: Evangelical Christians Celebrate Victory Over ‘Embarrassed’ Germany

A German couple who wanted to homeschool their children have been granted political asylum in the US. Evangelical Christians have welcomed the decision, claiming that Germany was trying to “coerce ideological uniformity” through its ban on homeschooling.

Christian fundamentalists have welcomed the decision by a US court to award a German family political asylum in the United States because the

Obama Urges Repeal Of Ban On Open Gays In Military

President Barack Obama is urging Congress to repeal the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military, but Democratic allies and Republican opponents alike are criticizing his approach.

Obama’s effort to eliminate the “don’t ask, don’t tell” practice faces resistance not just from Congress, but also from the Pentagon, where some top officials have been strident in their support for th

From Seeds Grows An Appreciation For Cycle Of Life

This morning started with the chore of filling the birdfeeder.

The chore started long ago. My earliest clear memory of it goes back 53 years.

My mother used to tear up old bread and toss it around the front yard so the local birds could eat it. Those last two hot dog buns and the pancake that slipped off the plate and hit the floor were likewise cast to the birds.

Feeding the birds became
